| | To begin modeling in the highlights and shadows, I apply separate glazes of
Old Holland cadmium red, Windsor Newton rose madder genuine, and red lake. All
are thinned with liquin (4 or 5 parts for each part of oil paint) with the
exception of cadmium red. This is a strong pigment requiring only a suggestion
of color. The rose madder and red lake are transparent and the cadmium red
is made so by the thinness of the mixture. As a result,
all the underlying detail remains visible.
